I think this was pretty dead on. Especially this here:

"he only people they could help were those with years of entrenched behaviour and millions of dollars in capital and no clue at all. Who had to have social media spelled out to them in a way that someone who’s always generated massive profits from their large multimillion dollar workforce staffed company would."

Yeah, that's a good demographic to target -- extremely wealthy and stupid people. Worked wonders for Scientology and the bastardized LA version of Kabbalah.

The personal branding, good guy strategy is for the long haul. It absolutely will not make you money this week or next week. It will not make you money this year. Doing work will.

I think you're providing more of a service in documenting your mistakes than the pro bloggers are doing by flaunting their success, which as any of them would attest is 90% being there first. Keep up the good work.

"Andrew Dubber, who is a music promotion blogger I respect, had already put me on to Chris Brogan as well as Chris Garrett who had told me that I was a “confrontational” marketer."

^^See, now I know which one of them said "confrontational" and now I can grok in fullness.

@ Yael - thanks! I may not be perfect, but I like to think at least I'm honest with myself.

@ Justin - haha come on man, don't be cute! I'm pretty shabby on structure when in flight and shy on editing but you "honestly had a hard time making sense of most of this"?

This is my biz blog I'm just developing, just trying to build up a base of content by posting some pieces I felt I wanted to write for my own sake, then maybe moving on from there. I didn't expect Chris to send everyone on down!

I honestly had a hard time making sense of most of this, if it's important enough to get off your chest it's worth re-writing. As someone with no context for this I was baffled, especially be the structure of paragraphs like this early one:

"By the time I found Chris Brogan who is highly respected by a music promotion blogger I respect, Andrew Dubber I’d already been told by Chris Garrett (also highly credited by dubber) that I was a “confrontational” marketer."

Maybe you're going for a William S. Burroughs cutup commentary on new media and name-dropping and I didn't get the joke. I also have no idea what the context for this particular blog is, if this is your personal catharsis space, right on and nevermind.

I found this post because of Chris Brogan -- I've never encountered you before. This post is raw, rough, and honest and it struck me in the heart. You're not perfect but you're trying. That's not a bad thing for anyone (including me) to have on their gravestone.

@ Zane - cheers man, very measured "social media" response, well done.

@ Adam - Some great points man, appreciate that, thanks for contributing.

@ Danny - don't think you got my point there bro, i think you're making a few assumptions in your framing that are exactly the ones I've tried to break down here with an honest discussion of practical realities for me.

@ Joe - but is it really negative though? Is it negative to share my personal experience? And I'm hardly suggesting that these guys I've mentioned have no value. You've just got to always have some critical analysis on how you measure and respond to how the value applies to you in these guys content.

PS: shouldn't you guys be doing some work? HAHA

Why so negative?

Is your intention to spare your readers from reading content that doesn't work for you?

If so, why link back to "the worst of the lot"?

Here's hoping that you last long enough on admitted poor service to make the money and enjoy the success that you obviously crave.

As a marketer, you've probably heard that the best form of advertising is word of mouth - when word gets around that you don't really care about your service, even your most loyal customers may find your product or service elsewhere.

That's some rant..!

I think if you follow the advice blindly of any one person too much you're probably never going to succeed anyway.

Chris Brogan does have great content on his site, I will defend him. He also writes stuff for new people as well as experienced users. He is friendly. I don't see what the problem with that is.

Flashback a few years and I was doing alot of what you were doing -- music promotion. I'm alot like you in that I produce music and used to DJ and do promotions for bands and shows. Our scene (esp the marketing aspects) were cutthroat and the being nice and being patient approach didnt work.

I have a feeling we come from the same places on the net. The snarky, real, unforgiving areas. Being nice there doesn't work. But, I think the scene is maturing and less edgy as it once was aside from certain social areas like 4chan and Digg.

You may have a point, the hoardes of people trying to purely become mini Chris Brogans and mini-Seth Godins may or may not make it unless they are unique and actually do bring something different to the table. But I think there are plenty of people who are learning from them, just as they learn from less popular bloggers.

The popular people you mention have developed large followings for a reason though they do offer alot of great wisdom. It might not be content that you dig, but I bet alot of others get great value from it.

Maybe it's an opportunity for you to differentiate yourself...hey you're doing something right, Chris Brogan was the one who linked me here.
